Effective Goal Setting: How to Make Dreams a Reality

Goal setting can help you achieve your dreams and make lasting positive changes in your life. It's amazing what's possible if you set clear, achievable goals and make a plan to reach them. Whether you are unsure of your goals or know exactly what you want, today we'll be breaking down actionable steps toward making your goals happen!

Get clear on what you really want

Oftentimes, it's easy to get swept up in what we think we "should" do, be, or have. Before taking on a new goal -- big or small -- get clear on what you want and why you want it. It's easy to set goals that other people think we should have, instead of goals that are truly meaningful to you. Take the time to reflect on what you really want, and get clear on why it matters to you.

Consider a journaling practice to help you get clear on your goals. Ask yourself questions like:

• What do I really want?

• How will reaching this goal make me feel?

• Is this really what I want, or is it what others think I should do?

• What's the first step I can take toward achieving this

Create realistic goals

Once you've identified a goal, create SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) goals to work towards. A SMART goal is:

  • Specific: Be specific about what you want to achieve

  • Measurable: Make sure that your goal is measurable so you can track your progress along the way.

  • Attainable: Set goals that are realistic and attainable within the given timeframe.

  • Relevant: Your goal should be relevant to your current situation and move you closer to achieving what you want.

  • Time-bound: Set a timeline for achieving your goal and effectively work towards it.

Be realistic with yourself about what you can do and how long it will take. It's important that your goals are specific and measurable so you can track your progress along the way.

Know Your Priorities

Everyone has limited time and resources, so it's important to identify the most important tasks or goals on your list and focus on these first. Prioritizing can help you avoid becoming distracted by less important tasks or goals. When identifying your priorities, consider which tasks or goals will have the most significant impact on your life or work. Consider what's most urgent, and what will bring you the most satisfaction or result in long-term benefits.

Remember: "Life's a balancing act. You have multiple roles and goals, and you can do it all - just not all at once."-- Denise Morrison

Take action

Once you've identified what you want, created SMART goals, and prioritized your tasks or goals, it's time to take action! This can be the most difficult part of achieving any goal, but it's also the most rewarding. When taking action, focus on breaking down your goal into smaller steps and focusing on them one at a time. Take small actions that move you closer to achieving your goals each day -- even if those actions seem inconsequential. It's amazing how seemingly "little" actions can stack up.

Examples of actions could include:

  • Making that phone call

  • Buying that domain

  • Having that tough conversation

  • Applying for that job you've been eyeing

Acknowledge Your Emotions

Reaching goals often involves emotional labor as well as physical and mental effort. Emotions can be especially powerful obstacles to progress and self-improvement, so it's important to allow yourself to feel your emotions and process them in a healthy way. Acknowledging your emotions can help you identify what triggers might be holding you back or causing stress, and figure out how to address them in a productive way. Consider keeping a journal or seeking support from a mental health professional if you need help processing difficult emotions.

Take Breaks

It's easy to become consumed with work or other obligations when working towards goals or accomplishments. However, taking breaks is essential for maintaining productivity and avoiding burnout. Taking time off to relax and recharge can actually improve your overall performance by helping you return with renewed energy and focus. Be sure to schedule regular breaks into your plan and use this time to do things that bring you joy and relaxation.

Surround Yourself with Supportive People

Surrounding yourself with a supportive community can be a powerful motivator when working towards your goals. Having people around you to encourage and support you can make all the difference in staying motivated, especially during tough times. Consider connecting with like-minded individuals who share your values and goals. Joining a group or community can help you find people to share your journey with, and hold you accountable for the work you need to do.

Ask for Help

We all need help from time to time, and it's important to take advantage of the resources available to us. This could mean asking for help from family or friends, hiring a professional, or seeking guidance from someone with more experience in your field. Recognize that asking for help doesn't mean you're incompetent or incapable. It's simply recognizing that there are those who may be more equipped or knowledgeable than you at this stage

Celebrate Your Progress

Along the way, celebrate your successes and milestones - no matter how small! Doing so can help keep you motivated to reach your goals. Celebrate the small wins that move you closer to achieving what you want. This could mean taking a break for ten minutes, getting an ice cream cone, or sharing your progress with someone who supports and encourages you.
Simply setting a goal and doing your best to reach is an act of bravery and courage! Remember to take time to appreciate yourself, your efforts, and the progress you've made. Navigating your goals can be challenging, but it's important to remember that you're capable of achieving anything you set your mind to.
