Five signs someone is good for your mental health
If a partner, a friend, or a colleague is emotionally healthy, chances are being around them will benefit you mentally and emotionally as well. This person is someone in your corner who understands you, listens to you, and supports you when you need them the most. We feel best when we know that someone will be there for us without judging us; that we won’t be seen as weak when we need support. Generally, people in good mental health are comfortable with themselves. They don’t feel the need to fix others and change them to their own liking. Wondering how to know if someone is good for your mental health? Here are some signs!
They ask you questions about yourself and listen empathetically to your answers. They genuinely care about what is going on in your life and give you the space to open up.
They don’t want to change you. It’s so important to feel valued for exactly who you are. Of course, if you express to them that you’d like help making positive changes in your life, this doesn’t mean that they are actively trying to change who you are; they are simply supporting your goals.
They respect your boundaries. This is a big one! The people in your life who are most beneficial to your mental health are those who honor and respect your personal boundaries. When you feel comfortable sharing your boundaries and feel that they are taken seriously, that is a sign that someone is good for your mental health.
They are happy when you’re happy. The people who you surround yourself with should be your cheerleaders and biggest supporters. Unhealthy relationships often include feelings of jealousy and manipulation. When someone is good for your mental health, they are happy to see you succeed, and you don’t feel guilty or worried when sharing your wins with them.
They talk openly about their inner world and can be emotionally vulnerable. By allowing themselves to be seen and heard, they are opening up the space for you to do the same.
Who we surround ourselves with plays an enormous role in the people we become. When we’re surrounded by people who lift us up and treat us with respect, our lives become infinitely better.
