Self-Love Habits to Start Practicing

Self-love is the practice of caring for yourself and honoring your own needs. The relationship we have with ourselves sets the tone for every relationship we will have, which is why it’s so important to practice self-love and self-care.

Our toughest critic is often the one staring back at us in the mirror. We’re so quick to criticize ourselves for not meeting the expectations that others had for us, and in the process, we forget that we owe ourselves that same compassion and grace that we give to others.

Here are some simple practices to show yourself some love and give yourself the attention you truly deserve.

  1. Reframe your negative thoughts: Although negative thoughts about ourselves will inevitably pop up, we don’t need to believe them. Get into the habit of reframing that negative thought with a positive one immediately after you notice yourself saying it. For example, “I’m so stupid” → “I’m so human.”

  2. Pay attention to your needs: So often we’re running around taking care of others that we forget to ask ourselves what is it that we need. Whether it’s taking a short break to stretch after sitting at your desk or saying no to that invitation that you really want to say no to, give yourself what you need.

  3. Journal each morning: There’s something so powerful about writing down your thoughts in the morning, before you get into the hustle and bustle of the day. You don't need to be a good writer to journal — it doesn’t even need to make sense! The simple act of noticing how you feel first thing in the morning is game-changing.

  4. Learn to say no: Saying “no” often means saying “yes” to ourselves. It is kind to be clear and express your needs than to agree to something you’ll be resentful for later.

  5. Ask for help: This one is so simple, but it is probably the hardest to do. We’d like to think that we can do it all on our own and don’t need any help, but as humans, we’re meant to lean on each other. As important as it is to help others, it’s important for that help to be reciprocated and received.

Even incorporating just one of these practices will make a huge difference in your life. Give yourself the love and care you deserve, and watch your life change.
