Tips for parents to help their children cope with going back to school

Many parents are undoubtedly worried about the start of the new school year, and of course about their children's mental wellness during the pandemic.

As a parent, it’s important to stay calm and reassure your children that the frustration and anxiety they feel is valid. For the little ones in elementary school, they may not understand what is going on and can feel confused and scared. For teens, middle school and high school can be overwhelming in general whether it’s the changes and social pressures that they face in middle school or the weight of college applications in high school and these uncertain times can take a toll on mental health.

Here are a few ways to help your children cope with going back to school:

  1. Accept and validate your child's emotions: acknowledge that this is difficult and do your best to not diminish how they are feeling, but help them accept the reality of the situation.

  2. Help your kids understand the pandemic: the pandemic has taught us that children are way more resilient and adaptable than we give them credit for, and helping them understand what’s going on can help them feel less in the dark and confused.

  3. Get professional help when needed: therapy can be incredibly helpful and life-changing for children. It can provide a safe space to open up, become more in tune with their emotions, and develop healthy ways to cope with their feelings.
