Walking for Mental Health

Six Reasons to Go On a Walk

Personally, I love taking walks. Studies show that walking can help ease anxiety, depression, and overall bad moods. Sometimes when our mental states are in a place where going to the gym or getting dressed to go to a yoga class feels like too much effort, walking may feel more doable.

“Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands. They just don’t.”

This is one of my favorite quotes from Elle Woods! Walking is definitely a form of exercise but it has so many other benefits. Some of these benefits include:

  1. Connecting with nature: One of the most healing things is being out in nature and breathing fresh air. A short walk can do wonders for your mood and overall sense of connection to the world around you. You may even hear the birds sing, see a cute dog, or find a beautiful, grounding tree and fresh flowers.

  2. Getting a dose of Vitamin D: Going on a walk can help you get this essential vitamin that is just as helpful for your mental health as it is for your physical health. Research has shown that vitamin D can regulate your mood and help with depression.

  3. Creating a space to let your mind wander: For those who find meditation difficult or simply want an alternative option for mindfulness, walking is a powerful way to notice what is going on in your internal world.

  4. Moving your body: Just like Elle Woods so perfectly stated, exercise in any form creates endorphins that boost your mood. Moving your body feels good and is healthy for you!

  5. Being away from your screens: It feels like we’re all on our screens constantly. This can often make us feel tired or drained after a long day of working on your laptop or scrolling on social media during your free time. Going on a walk in between those long hours of screen time can help recenter your mind and tune into the present moment.

  6. Practicing self-love: As all of the benefits above note, walking is amazing for your psychical and mental health. It is an act of self-love to take care of yourself in ways that are enjoyable to you.

So take care, and head outside for a walk when you can!
